What Is the New Outreach?

Introduction: In most cases, traditional evangelism methods don’t work well in today’s culture. But, building relationships does work.

Summary:

  • Years ago, evangelism used to be done by the “evangelism committee” or only certain Christians.
  • But today, many believers are coming back to missional living. They are realizing that they don’t need a special gifting in order to tell people about Jesus.
  • The new approach to evangelism is focused on building authentic relationships and getting to know people on a personal level.
  • In order to tell people about Jesus, we first have to show them that we care. These are people, not projects!
  • We don’t need to push the Gospel onto people. The purpose of the relationship is deeper than just  converting that person.
  • Look for secular conversations that lead to spiritual conversations.
  • What to do when you don’t know the answer to a spiritual question? “I don’t know, but I’ll look into it.”
  • Encourage people within the church to share stories about how they are reaching out to their neighbors. Help each other set up and host get-togethers. The church can buy a set of supplies that people from church can borrow.
  • Don’t wait until you’re comfortable. Take a step of faith!

Thought Starters:

  • What does your church currently see as evangelism?
  • Do you know anybody who is doing this type of neighborhood evangelism already? Could you ask that person to help you lead your church in a similar direction?
